Look for samples that ask you to infer the meaning of a word

Try writing practice sentences in a way that will help you recall the meaning of the word and how it is usually used. 

Try categorizing whether a word is a feel-good word or a feel-bad word: philanthropist vs. misanthropist. That way if you do not have the correct meaning, at least you have an idea of when to use the word. This helps you eliminate wrong answers from a list of meanings.
